The New York Yankees today purchased the contract of infielder Scott Sizemore from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The 29-year-old graduate of Hickory High in Chesapeake has spent time at second and third base with Detroit and Oakland. He has a career batting average of .238 with 14 homers and 70 RBIs, but hits .272 against left-handers.
Sizemore missed the 2012 season after tearing his left anterior cruciate ligament during spring training. He reinjured the knee two games into last season, and hasn't played in the majors since. He signed with the Yankees in the offseason and was batting .344 in 10 Triple-A games this year.
In his only full major league season, Sizemore hit .245 with 11 home runs and 56 RBIs with the Tigers and A's in 2011.
The Yankees have struggled with injuries this season, the latest to catcher Francisco Cervelli. He was put on the 60-day disabled list today with a strained right hamstring, clearing a roster spot for Sizemore.
New York's game tonight against the Chicago Cubs at Yankee Stadium was postponed because of rain. Sizemore could make his Yankees debut Wednesday, when the teams play a day-night doubleheader.
