HRSC's College REC Forum wins National Award

NASC Award  The Hampton Roads Sports Commission is pleased to announce that   we received the “Locally Created Event of the Year” Award (under $200,000 budget) by the National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC). On April 1, the NASC announced the Hampton Roads Sports Commission’s Recruiting Eligibility Compliance (REC) Forum, held in February 2013, was the recipient of this national award.

Elizabeth Chaney Young, Director of Membership and Marketing for tthe NASC, said, "We are very pleased to award the Hampton Roads Sports Commission with this recognition. The inaugural REC Forum event hosted by the Sports Commission in 2013 was a unique new event to the region and provided vital information and community outreach."

The REC Forum was held February 12, 2013 from 6-8:30pm at The Founders Inn and Spa in Virginia Beach.  As National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules are ever-changing, parents and athletes are responsible for keeping up with immense amounts of information. The Sports Commission hosted this forum to educate the families of potential collegiate student-athletes, guidance counselors, athletic directors and coaches to ensure their student athletes have an easier and successful transition into college athletics. The Hampton Roads Sports Commission partnered with the NCAA, Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), Mid Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) representatives and compliance staff from local universities (Old Dominion University, Norfolk State University, Virginia Wesleyan College & Chowan University) to serve as panelists and review the necessary steps to playing collegiate athletics. A college and vendor exhibit fair was held as well.  MEAC Commissioner, Dr. Dennis Thomas, served as keynote speaker and spoke on the topic of “Finding the Right Fit.”  He urged student-athletes to look at the entire college package to be sure one would be happy without the sport in case of injury or a change of heart. More than 300 attendees and 40 vendors participated in this free event.

The NASC began an annual awards program in 2002 to recognize the work conducted by sports commissions across the country. In addition to “Locally Created Event of the Year,” awards include: Sports Commission of the YearSports Tourism Organization of the YearMarketing Campaign of the YearSports Event Professional of the Year. The winning “Event of the Year” can be newly created or a long-standing event, but must be an event/program created by the submitting organization to serve local community or an organizational need (i.e. fundraising, scholarship, volunteer recruitment). The Hampton Roads Sports Commission was awarded the “Locally Created Event of the Year” in the under $200,000 budget category. This is the first award the Hampton Roads Sports Commission has received from the NASC.
