U.S. field hockey team, Beach native lose Olympic match

Virginia Beach native Caroline Nichols and the women’s U.S. field hockey team lost a preliminary match this morning against Australia, according to the London Olympics site.

The team has three points in the preliminary rounds ahead of  its match Saturday with New Zealand. On Sunday, the team beat Argentina 1-0.

Nichols, 27, also is a graduate of Salem High School. She competed in 2008 in the Beijing games.

The semifinals begin Aug. 8. Great Britain, New Zealand and Netherlands each had six points this morning while China had four.

Twelve teams play are divided into two pools of six for the preliminary rounds, according to the site. Each team plays the others in its pool and the top two teams in each pool move on to the semifinals. The winners there move on to the medal match.
