Junior Olympics are Underway

Hampton Roads bustled with activity Monday as thousands of young athletes from around the world competed in the AAU Junior Olympic Games
The track and field athletes kicked off six days of competition at Dick Price Stadium at Norfolk State, while across the water, swimmers began practicing at the Brittingham-Midtown Community Center in Newport News, where athletes will begin competing today through Friday.
With more than 15,000 participants in 18 sports, the AAU Junior Olympics bills itself as the largest annual multisport event in the United States. Other events throughout the region include baton, beach tennis, beach volleyball, bowling, cheerleading, field hockey, gymnastics, jump rope, karate, multievents, powerlifting, table tennis, taekwondo, trampoline and tumbling, weightlifting and wrestling.
