Old Dominion 63, Coastal Carolina 35

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - What an offensive showdown this turned out to be at S.B. Ballard Stadium Saturday. When Old Dominion needed to convert on third down, Taylor Heinicke answered. The Walter Payton finalist connected to Larry Pinkard for a 73-yard score, and that was the play that changed the game in Norfolk in round two the FCS playoffs.

All the ballots for the Walter Payton award have already been turned in. Heinicke proved Saturday that he deserved Division 1-AA's top award. Coastal Carolina scored first, but Old Dominion answered every time.

Heinicke threw for six touchdowns and rushed for two more while leading Old Dominion over Coastal Carolina 63-35 in a second-round Football Championship Subdivision playoff game Saturday.

Heinicke completed 32 of 44 passes for 497 yards and rushed seven times for 45 yards. His six touchdown passes tied an FCS playoff record and his 542 yards total offense established another mark.

The sophomore's 4,655 passing yards in 2012 are the second-highest single-season total in FCS history.

Old Dominion (11-1) will play Georgia Southern in next week's quarterfinals.

Heinicke threw for touchdowns on three consecutive possessions after Coastal Carolina (8-5) tied the game at 35 late in the third period. Pinkard caught three touchdown passes for Old Dominion, including a 6-yarder that put the Monarchs ahead for good with 1:52 remaining in the third period.

Aramis Hillary passed for 352 yards and three touchdowns for the Chanticleers.

Old Dominion scored at least 14 points in every quarter. The Monarchs scored 21 points in the fourth, which separated them from Coastal Carolina.

The Monarchs advance to the quarterfinals for the first time in the history of their program.

Final score: 63 to 35.
