Gaming Tournament Takes Place Same Day as MLK Basketball Challenge

NORFOLK, Va. – Fan favorites, NBA 2k22, Madden NFL 22 and Super Smash Bros. will be featured at the inaugural MLK Holiday Esports Tournament held on Jan. 17 at the Norfolk Scope. The Esports tournament, produced by the Hampton Roads Sports Commission, will consist of a “Youth-High School” division for gamers ages 8-17, who will have the choice to play either NBA 2k22 or Super Smash Bros. and a “World” Division giving players 18 and over the choice to play either Madden NFL 22 or Super Smash Bros.

The “Youth-High School” division tournament will kick-off at 10 a.m. (check-in/free play begins at 9:30 a.m.) and run until approximately 3 p.m. The “World” division competition will begin at 3:30 p.m. (check-in/free play begins at 3 p.m.) and run until approximately 8 p.m. The registration fee for the Youth-High School division will be $10; and $15 for gamers to participate in the World division competition.

Prizes for the Youth-High School division will be awarded in the form of gaming related gift cards and will be awarded to the top four places for each game (eight total winners), featuring a $200 gift card as the top prize for each game title. The top four winners (eight total winners) of each game title within the World division will be paid out from a $1,500 total prize pool with a championship or first place payout of $250 for each game title.

Esports tournament participants and guests who desire to attend the Bob Dandridge MLK Holiday Basketball Challenge must purchase tickets online at or at the Scope box office for $10. The Bob Dandridge MLK Challenge will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. inside the main auditorium at the Norfolk Scope.

Age Classification: Youth– High School Division: ages 8– 17; World Division: 18 and over.*Gamers can only choose to play in ONE of the two divisions offered in the tournament, and gamers can only choose to play ONE of the game titles offered in that particular division.

*NBA 2k22 and Madden NFL 22 tournament play will be single elimination format and Super Smash Bros. will be played in a double-elimination tournament format. Super Smash Bro. will be 1 v 1 game competition format.

*Madden NFL 22 and NBA 2k22 will be played on the PS4 gaming platform and Super Smash Brothers will be played on the Nintendo Switch gaming platform.

*Gamers will be permitted to bring their own PS4 or Nintendo Switch controllers for use during the tournament. Controllers for both gaming platforms will be provided at the tournament for participants who do not bring their own equipment.

*Gameplay will be streamed live via Twitch.
