Apprentice School senior offensive lineman Larry Peterson and freshman punter Blake Penix were honored on Tuesday night at the first Celebration of College Football Awards Banquet sponsored by the Hampton Roads Sports Commission at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside.
All six football playing schools in the Hampton Roads area nominated an offensive and defensive player to be recognized at this banquet. The banquet covered the schools in the Football Championship Series (Old Dominion, Hampton, Norfolk State, William & Mary) along with those who play on the Division III level (Christopher Newport, Apprentice School).
Peterson, a senior electrician apprentice from Virginia Beach, started all nine games before a season-ending injury against Wesley College ended his collegiate career. He was recognized as a second team All-Atlantic Central Football Conference lineman as a junior and helped an offensive line that paved the way to two of the top five single season passing yardage totals in his career.
Penix, a freshman electrician apprentice from Jesup, GA., was named first team All-State College Division punter by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association. He averaged 36 yards per punt, over 52 yards per kickoff and was 4-of-7 on field goals. His season long punt was 60 yards against Catholic and hit a pair of 32-yard field goals against Southern Virginia University and Greensboro College.
ODU's Ronnie Cameron was named the Area Defensive Player of the Year and William & Mary's Jonathan Grimes was honored as the Area Offensive Player of the Year.
