Former Hickory High standout Scott Sizemore signed a minor-league deal Sunday with the New York Yankees, multiple media outlets confirmed.
Sizemore, 29, missed all of the 2012 season after tearing his left anterior cruciate ligament during spring training. He reinjured the knee two games into the 2013 season, and hasn't played since.
In his only full major league season, Sizemore hit .245 with 11 home runs and 56 RBIs with the Detroit Tigers and Oakland A's in 2011.
Detroit selected him in the fifth round of the 2006 major league draft out of Virginia Commonwealth. He was traded to the A's in May of 2011.
After the Yankees lost Robinson Cano via free agency and with Alex Rodriguez facing a season-long ban in 2014, Sizemore is expected to compete for playing time at second and third base.
