Can you imagine stuffing 17,500 goodie bags for an event?  It takes professional employees who know exactly how to do this job effectively and in a timely manner. That’s why the Hampton Roads Sports Commission hired Eggleston to do the job. A kick-off party for the AAU Junior Olympic Games was the highlight of the day for many individuals with disabilities at the Eggleston facility on Military Highway on June 29th.

The Hampton Roads Sports Commission staff, including five interns, showed up to work side-by-side about 40  Eggleston employees, who had already completed over 7,000 of the goodie bags. HRSC brought cake for a break and another sponsor of the AAU Junior Olympic Games, Papa John’s, arrived with pizzas for all. Papa John’s mascot, Mr. Slice, added to the jubilant atmosphere!

“We presented Eggleston with a gold medal to show our appreciation for their efforts and make sure they felt like a part of our championship team that produces this event” said Lauren Bland, Executive Director of the HRSC.  “It truly takes a region to host this event!”

Hosted by the Hampton Roads Sports Commission (HRSC), an affiliate of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, the AAU Junior Olympic Games will be this summer from July 29 to August 8, where athletes ages seven to 17 compete. A lot goes on behind the scenes in planning for the AAU Junior Olympic Games, which will bring 35,000 attendees, including 15,000 athletes to Hampton Roads. This summer marks the fifth time the HRSC has hosted the AAU Junior Olympic Games ('98, '01, '06 & '10).

“We are happy that the Hampton Roads Sports Commission has chosen Eggleston associates to assemble athlete packets for the AAU Junior Olympic Games,” said Paul Atkinson, President/CEO of Eggleston. “This national event is great for Hampton Roads and also for the employment of persons with disabilities, a valuable source of work in our community.”

This is just one of many examples of the local community embracing the AAU Junior Olympic Games. 2,000 volunteers will be needed to cover events at venues in our five sponsoring cities: Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Just as important as their hard work in a wide range of jobs will be the warm welcome volunteers will give our visitors from every state in the country. Whether your company has multiple locations in the areas where these young athletes live or you just want to make sure they never forget their good impressions of Hampton Roads, please promote to your employees to volunteer. We have all kinds of opportunities for them to work together, have fun, and show our visitors that we totally support the AAU Junior Olympic Games!
