A new football league is coming to South Hampton Roads.

It’s called the National Spring Football League and the local team is the Virginia Beach Stringrays.

The league is a developmental football league for players who are interested in trying to get into the NFL/CFL. The season begins play in March of 2014.

Other teams in the league include the Arizona Racers, Boston Freedom Fighters, Florida Tide, Georgia Blaze, Los Angeles Xplosion, Ohio Pride, Oklahoma Cyclones, Rhode Island Navigators, San Antonio Defenders, San Jose Rush and the Texas Heat Seekers.

Virginia Beach head coach Dave Keeny said the Stingrays will hold a tryout for players ages 21-29 on Aug. 25 at Dre Bly Field at 1276 Baker Road in Virginia Beach. Registration is at 12:30 p.m. and the cost is $65. Tryouts begin at 2.

“The Virginia Beach Stingrays are in the National Spring Football League to provide opportunities in a developmental league for players to improve their skills, and develop as people,” he said. “We are excited to be able to coach the players from the 757 Tidewater Region, where there is great high school and college coaching, and throughout the state of Virginia and give them the opportunity to play for the Stingrays. Given the passion and support for football in Virginia Beach and surrounding areas, we expect to have a good turnout.”

For more information call coach Keeny at 484-529-3906.
