Newest rotating exhibit at Museum features the Norfolk Admirals, Norfolk Tides and Virginia Beach Piranhas

PORTSMOUTH, VA – The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame & Museum is focusing on local sports teams in Hampton Roads with its newest “Virginian’s in the Spotlight” rotating exhibit entitled “Sports in Hampton Roads.” The exhibit features three local teams including the Norfolk Admirals, Norfolk Tides, and the Virginia Beach Piranhas. Guests of the museum will have the chance to see the exhibit now through June 26.


The Norfolk Admirals play their home games at the Norfolk in the American Hockey League as an affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks. Featured in the Norfolk Admirals display is game-used equipment from the 2011-12 Calder Cup Championship team. On June 9, 2012, the Norfolk Admirals won the heralded Calder Cup with a 6-1 win over the Toronto Marlies.


Affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles, the Norfolk Tides are a baseball team in the International League and play their home games at Harbor Park in downtown Norfolk. The Tides recently started their season and play through the beginning of September.


The Virginia Beach Piranhas have played soccer at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex since 2006 and plays in the USL Premier Development League. The Piranhas also have a women’s team in the USL-W-League. Both teams are represented in the display case including the first game ball the Piranhas used, trophies, jerseys and other memorabilia.


Artifacts from each team are featured in the exhibit, and visitors only have a limited timeframe to view the display case.

The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame & Museum is located at 206 High Street in Portsmouth. Spring hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday – Friday, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. The museum is closed Mondays after Labor Day until Memorial Day and on select winter holidays. Admission is $7 per person; $6 military; $6 seniors 65 and older and free for ages 2 and under. Parking is located behind the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame & Museum in the Middle Street Parking Garage. FREE parking is available on weekends and after 6 p.m. on weekdays.
