CORRECTION: In a version of this story, the wrong result was listed. The Army wheelchair basketball team won the gold medal. This version has been corrected.

Hampton Roads sent 10 athletes to the Warrior Games in Colorado and most are coming back with medals.

This was the third year for the weeklong, Paralympic-style competition for about 200 wounded, injured or ill service members. It ended Saturday, and as is often the case, the competition results were not the most interesting part.

For retired Petty Officer 2nd Class Oswald Gould of Chesapeake, that came during the men's bicycle open in which he came in last place.

A cancer survivor and newcomer to the sport, Gould was in tremendous pain and was tempted to slow down by the end of the race. Then Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Angelo Anderson came up from behind. Anderson, a corpsman at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center, was competing in a different race, but the Navy co-captain stayed with Gould until the end of the race.

"Angelo encouraged me and told me to keep pumping," Gould said in a Navy news release. "I kept going and came home strong."

Medalists included:

Army Sgt. Justin Steele of Newsoms: silver, part of three-man team archery compound.

Army Sgt. Monica Southall of Suffolk: gold, women's shot put and sitting volleyball team.

Marine Pfc. Kirk Salmon, Wounded Warrior Battalion East at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center: gold, men's air rifle prone, men's upper body injury 1500-meter race and Marine 4x100-meter men's relay team; silver, air rifle standing and men's upper-body injury 100- and 200-meter races.

Retired Petty Officer 2nd Class Oswald Gould, Chesapeake: silver, Navy/Coast Guard 4x100-meter men's relay team.

Staff Sgt. Paul Roberts of Newport News: gold, Army wheelchair basketball team.

Cpl. Dylan Kelly, Wounded Warrior Battalion East at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center: silver, sitting volleyball team.
