Sherry and Angelo Celesia of the Tidewater Striders were selected by Road Runners Club of America for the “Outstanding Youth Program Director of the Year” Award for their work with the New Energy program.

The award was presented last weekend in Albuquerque, N.M. There are approximately 1,700 clubs in the organization.

The Celesias took over the New Energy program in 2008. Under the previous leadership, only competitive runners took part in the program, but the Celesias opened it to anyone.

New Energy, which has kids ranging in age from 6 to 16, has bases in Norfolk, Suffolk and Virginia Beach, and plans to open another in Chesapeake.

The Celesias have recently started New Energy Power, a program for kids with special needs.
