Norfolk Police Department Crowned 2017 Hero Games Champions
The Norfolk Police Department wins the 2017 Hampton Roads Hero Games.

The Hampton Roads Sports Commission hosted the second annual Hampton Roads Hero Games presented by Endurance IT Services, October 20 - November 5, 2017.  The event was a multi-day, multi-sport competition for first responders, retirees, their families, and public supporters. The Games were created to support first responders and to show camaraderie with other first responder departments throughout Hampton Roads, while also allowing the business community and public to show their support and appreciation.

“On behalf of the Hampton Roads Sports Commission, it is an honor and a privilege to host the Hero Games,” said Wes Hall, Executive Director of the Hampton Roads Sports Commission. “We all know the positive impact that our first responders have on our communities and I hope, in turn, this event has a positive impact on our local heros.”

The Hero Games’ athletes competed in five sporting events during a two week period.  Events consisted of a pistol challenge, volleyball tournament, crossfit competition, firefighter challenge, and a softball tournament.  Departments earned points by competing in events and the department with the most cumulative points at the end of the Hero Games won the Hero Games Cup and money to donate to the charity of their choice.

After a competitive two weeks, the 2017 Hampton Roads Hero Games, presented by Endurance IT Services declared a champion! The Norfolk Police Department secured victory with an overall score of 2,100 points.  The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office, 2016 Hero Games Champion, placed second with a score of 1,790 points, and the Chesapeake Police Department finished close behind in third place with a score of 1,500 points.  Departments from Chesapeake, Hampton, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, and Newport News competed in the event.  Congratulations to all the winners and everyone who competed!

“The competition and sportsmanship from all the teams was amazing,” said Corporal B. Serrano, III with the Norfolk Police Department, who competed in our 2017 Hero Games. “I will definitely be participating again next year!”

Thank you to all our first responders who participated. It was our hope that the Hero Games allowed for healthy competition against other first responder departments in the Hampton Roads area while enjoying these moments with family and friends!
